Designing emails to look good isn't just about making them look pretty in Photoshop and then keeping your fingers crossed hoping the user will download all the images. Maybe they use a mobile phone or are using a pay-as-you-go dongle so may not want to waste the bandwidth with large files.

To design a good email you have to take into account that emails need to be small, cant be built just from images alone and have to look good in all kinds of mail programs which render styles differently. For instance the difference between viewing an email in Outlook vs. GMail if the email isn't designed correctly can make it appear like a messy scrawl. GMail and Hotmail have issues aligning text compared to Outlook and HTML.

A good email or newsletter design is a fine art and isn't the same thing as building a website, fortunately we have the skills to design emails and newsletters in such a way that the graphical content is minimal but has great impact and doesn't ruin the look and feel if the user chooses not to download them to the email application.
